Building Tomorrow's Workforce Through Education, Industry, and Community Partnerships
The Compton Chamber of Commerce proudly recognizes an outstanding educational initiative that is helping prepare the next generation of professionals for one of Southern California's most dynamic industries. Through the Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy, twenty Compton Unified School District scholars recently embarked on an unforgettable week of hands-on learning, industry exploration, and real-world aviation experiences that opened their eyes to the exciting possibilities available in aviation, aerospace, engineering, and emerging technologies.
Students representing Centennial High School, Compton High School, Compton Academy of Technology and Innovation (C-Tech), Enterprise, and Jefferson participated in the immersive program, which was made possible through an exceptional collaboration between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP), American Airlines, and the Fly Compton Foundation.
Discovering a World of Career Opportunities
For many students, aviation careers are often associated only with becoming an airline pilot. The ACE Academy demonstrated that the industry offers hundreds of rewarding career paths requiring a wide variety of interests, talents, and educational backgrounds.
Throughout the week, scholars explored careers in:
Commercial and private aviation
Aerospace engineering
Aircraft maintenance and repair
Air traffic control
Airport operations
Drone and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)
Aerospace manufacturing
Aviation safety and emergency services
Flight instruction
Logistics and transportation
By interacting directly with professionals working in these fields, students gained valuable insight into the education, training, and experience needed to pursue these careers while seeing firsthand how each profession contributes to the complex world of aviation.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
One of the greatest strengths of the ACE Academy is its emphasis on experiential learning. Rather than simply reading about aviation, students visited some of Southern California's most important aviation and aerospace facilities.
During the academy, scholars toured:
Relativity Space, where they learned about cutting-edge rocket manufacturing and space technology.
March Air Reserve Base, gaining exposure to military aviation operations.
Long Beach Airport Air Traffic Control Tower, where they observed the critical role air traffic controllers play in maintaining safe and efficient air travel.
Signature Aviation, providing a behind-the-scenes look at private aviation services.
Wing Drone Delivery, showcasing how drone technology is transforming logistics and package delivery.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Fire Department, highlighting aviation emergency response and airport safety.
American Airlines, where students explored commercial airline operations and the many professionals who keep passengers safely moving around the world.
These visits transformed abstract career ideas into tangible possibilities, allowing students to witness the technology, teamwork, and professionalism required across the aviation industry.
An Unforgettable Flight Experience
The highlight of the academy came at its conclusion, when each participant experienced something few young people ever have the opportunity to do—they climbed into the cockpit of an aircraft and took part in an introductory flight with certified pilots from the Fly Compton Foundation.
With the guidance of experienced flight instructors, scholars were introduced to the fundamentals of flight while gaining a new appreciation for the skill, discipline, and responsibility involved in aviation. For many students, it was their very first time in a small aircraft and an experience that may very well shape future educational and career decisions.

Southern California is home to one of the world's largest concentrations of aviation and aerospace companies, airports, logistics centers, and advanced manufacturing facilities. Not every participant will become a pilot—and that is precisely the point.
