Welcoming "Community Legal Aid SoCal" to the Compton Chamber

The Compton Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome Community Legal Aid SoCal as our newest Chamber business member and to celebrate the re-grand opening of its newly refurbished Compton office.

The Chamber looks forward to supporting their continued work in strengthening access to justice in our region.

Thurgood Marshall, Supreme Court Justice
Thurgood Marshall, Supreme Court Justice

The Compton law center is named after Thurgood Marshall, honoring the first African American Justice of the United States Supreme Court, who dedicated his life to advancing civil rights, equal protection under the law, and meaningful access to justice for underserved communities.

His legacy continues to guide the mission carried out within these walls.

Displayed prominently in the office is a framed quote from Thurgood Marshall that reflects the heart of the organization’s mission:

“None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. We got here because somebody — bent down and helped pick up our boots.”

The staff at the Thurgood Marshall Justice Center continue that legacy every day — bending down to help their clients pick up their boots and move forward with strength and dignity.

Established in 1993 as the Thurgood Marshall Justice Center, the Compton office has long been a pillar of access to justice for local families.
Established in 1993 as the Thurgood Marshall Justice Center, the Compton office has long been a pillar of access to justice for local families.

Since opening its doors in 1993, the Thurgood Marshall Justice Center has provided steadfast legal support to the Compton community. For more than three decades, staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that residents facing civil legal challenges are not left to navigate the system alone.

Today, a dedicated on-site team of attorneys and paralegals serves clients five days a week, assisting with housing and eviction matters, public benefits, domestic violence restraining orders, and other critical civil legal issues.

Thanks to a generous grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation, the Compton office is currently undergoing significant facility improvements. The S. Mark Taper Foundation is a private family foundation dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our communities by supporting nonprofit organizations across Southern California. Its investment in the Compton office strengthens the infrastructure needed to deliver critical civil legal services in a welcoming, modernized environment.

Residents of Compton are warmly invited to attend the upcoming re-grand opening celebration of the newly modernized office space. A ribbon cutting ceremony will soon be announced, with event details to be published shortly. This celebration marks not only a refreshed facility, but a renewed dedication to serving the people of Compton and neighboring communities with dignity, professionalism, and care.

The Compton Chamber wholeheartedly welcomes Community Legal Aid SoCal as a valued business member and community partner, and we look forward to supporting their continued work in strengthening access to justice in our region.
