About Compton VFW Post No. 5394

Compton VFD Post No. 5394
Compton VFD Post No. 5394

Compton VFW Post 5394 was founded on April 25, 1965, by twenty-five veterans returning from the Vietnam War who sought to support fellow service members and their community. Over the years, the Post has grown to several thousand members, making it the fourth largest VFW Post in California.

In 1982, the Post was renamed the Howard Martin Richardson VFW Post 5394 in honor of one of its late commanders.

For 60 years, the Post has served veterans, their families, and the Compton community, providing support, advocacy, and community programs while remaining self-sufficient. The Post continues its proud legacy of honoring those who served, supporting veterans and their families, and contributing to the local community.

About the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)

Founded in 1899 by veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) was created to support those who served overseas and to advocate for their rights, benefits, and healthcare. Many early veterans returned home wounded or ill with little to no support, and the VFW provided a united voice to ensure they were recognized and cared for.

Over the years, the VFW has represented veterans of World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan, playing a key role in establishing the Veterans Administration (VA), the GI Bill, the national cemetery system, and Veterans Day. The organization has also helped fund major national memorials, including those honoring the Vietnam War, Korean War, World War II, women in military service, and disabled veterans.

Today, with nearly 2 million members and Auxiliaries, the VFW continues its mission by supporting veterans, their families, and communities through advocacy, volunteer service, and outreach programs, contributing millions of hours annually to make a difference in communities across the nation.
