IS L.A.’S “FASHION DISTRICT” BECOMING A HISTORICAL DESIGNATION?
L.A.’s Fashion District was declining long before immigration raids, weakened by overseas competition, online commerce, reduced Hollywood demand and widespread labor violations. Enforcement accelerated the decline by exposing businesses dependent on unauthorized and off-the-books labor. UCLA’s reported losses were modeled from cellphone traffic—not verified sales—and largely excluded wholesale manufacturing. The district may survive, but as a much smaller industry, if at all.
